Iconic photos of Eastenders legend Dot Cotton in Gravesend

The face and voice of EastEnders legend Dot Cotton for over 35 years, actress June Brown has died at the age of 95. June was a universally recognisable and loved figure of British television, engrained into soap history.

Her family said they were “deeply saddened” to announce that their “beloved mother” had died “very peacefully” at her Surrey home on Sunday (3 April). Fellow EastEnders actor Adam Woodyatt described her as an “incredible woman” while an EastEnders spokesperson said: “There are not enough words to describe how much June was loved and adored by everyone at EastEnders, her loving warmth, wit and great humour will never be forgotten.”

June spent most of her life living in her Folkestone home having moved there early in life. She lived there with her second husband, Robert Arnold, with the pair married for 45 years until his death.

In an interview with Great British Life, she said: “I lived in Folkestone for years with Robert, my second husband. I wasn’t born there – that was in Suffolk – but I have always felt that some of my roots are in Folkestone.”

She added: “I have been a fan of Kent for many years, who wouldn’t be? It’s not known for its fruit and hops for nothing, it’s a beautiful, fertile county with nice people, a great heritage, a nice coast and some lovely theatres too.”

These photographs were taken on 25 February 1997. Following a short break, she was gearing up for a return to EastEnders on 14 April by getting into character in Gravesend.
