Lessons for Incoming Kindergarten Families

The Kindergarten Jump Start program prepares incoming students and their families for school.

We have prepared a series of five lessons for families to complete and share with their kindergarten student(s). These short and simple lessons focus on basic reading and math skills that are important for kindergarten success.

Lesson 1: Read Aloud

Read with your student as they learn about parts of a book and understanding a story. You will ask questions that explore the storyline and help them grow a love of reading.

Lesson 2: Sorting Objects

Help your student develop sorting skills as a math tool. Learning to sort is an important skill in match because it:  

  • Helps the student see how objects are the same and different.
  • Allows the student to demonstrate skills in making categories.
  • Helps the student know what they are counting. For example, if you want to know how many apples are in your fruit bowl, your child needs to know how to sort the apples from the rest of the fruit).

Lesson 3: Characters

As you read with your student you will explore the characters in a story. Understanding characters is important because it: 

  • Helps the student understand what is happening in the story.
  • Helps the student understand feelings.
  • Helps the student predict what might be coming next in the story.

Lesson 4: Counting Out

Learning to count is one of the most important math skills for students. In this lesson, students will count out a specific set of objects and match to the numeral.

Lesson 5: Read the Pictures

Your student will use the pictures on the cover and pages inside to get clues that tell them what the book is about. Learning to read the pictures is important because it:

  • Helps the student gain confidence in reading and understand what they are reading.
  • Helps the student learn to predict what happens next in a book.
