Mum disgusted after discovering ‘human faeces’ in Sheba cat food box bought from Hawkinge Lidl

A Kent mum has been left disgusted after discovering what appeared to be human faeces in a sealed box of cat food. Vicky Castle, 31, told KentLive that she thought there must have been a “deliberate” error in the packaging office with the Sheba product she bought from Lidl.

Vicky said that she arrived at the supermarket in Hawkinge at around 10am this morning (June 15) to do some shopping. She picked up a large box of Sheba wet cat food for her two cats, Bojo and Jezza, as well as a few other items.

However, as she got back in her car and began the short drive home, she said she started to notice an odd smell. “There was a bit of a smell in the shop but I didn’t think it was the box,” she told KentLive.

“The only other box was already open, so I chose the sealed box. I smelled it again in the car on the way back and wondered what the smell was.

“I thought it could have been gone off cat food; it smelled fishy almost. I got it home and unloaded the shopping and soon realised that the smell was coming from the box.”

As she unpacked her shopping, Vicky decided to open the sealed box to see what was inside. To her horror, she discovered what she described as human faeces.

“I opened the box and the waft of smell was just vile, I cannot describe it,” she said. “I was in total disbelief. Of all the things you’d expect to find, it’s not that. It was so clear that the smell was faeces and that this was human faeces.

The box had been sealed shut

“I live on a farm and we deal with lots of different types of faeces all the time, I know what it all smells like. There’s no doubt that this was from a human.”

Vicky put the box back in the car and drove back to the Lidl store. She explained that the store member even gagged as she showed him the horrific discovery.

“He told me to go and exchange it for another one, and luckily there was one on the shelf still,” she said. “They should have a word with the packaging office and see what’s going on in there. [I think] someone has done that deliberately and that’s pretty nasty.”

Vicky said the discovery was “absolutely revolting”

In a message to Sheba, seen by KentLive, Vicky said that the discovery was “absolutely revolting”. She added: “I can’t believe I’m writing this but I just bought a box of your cat food from Lidl in Hawkinge (Kent, UK) and the whole drive home kept thinking ‘what is that smell’. Thought the cat food might be open or off or something.

“Opened the box when I got back and there’s a huge, inch long blob of human poo smeared on the lid and across the top of some of the packets. It was absolutely revolting, made me gag. I took it straight back to Lidl where the lovely man sympathised and told me to take another box, which I did.

“I’m writing to let you know because there’s something nasty going on in your packaging office because someone’s done that on purpose. Really, really vile.”
