School Board Approves Replacement Levy Resolution

Maya and student. At this week’s board meeting, our Kent School District Board of Directors passed a resolution for a replacement Educational Programs and Operations (EP&O) levy to be placed on the February 11, 2020 ballot.

Voters will have an opportunity to maintain current funding for the following programs: safety and security; bullying prevention; career and technical education; and professional development that is not fully funded by the state for essential staff like classroom teachers, nurses, counselors, and bus drivers. This levy would replace our current levy approved by voters in 2018 that expires in December 2020.

Kent School District is asking voters to renew the levy at a rate that ensures the combined local tax rate remains stable while also addressing educational needs for all students. The amount being asked for is $69 million in 2021 and $76.25 million in 2022.

Superintendent Dr. Calvin J. Watts said at the board meeting that he is confident that this amount of funding would allow the District to maintain its current programs while remaining fiscally responsible and sensitive to the overall tax rate. Because the District is retiring previous bond debt, the overall combined local school tax rate remains stable at $3.89 per $1,000 of assessed property value.

“Investing in our students is investing in our community,” said Dr. Watts, “All students should be given the same opportunities regardless of their abilities, backgrounds or family income. This continued funding will ensure all students in Kent School District have the same opportunities to learn, grow and succeed.”

In the days, weeks, and months to come, more information and opportunities to engage in conversations with KSD leaders about the EP&O levy renewal will take place. Visit the levy section of our website for more details.
