Marine Terrace has been closed off in both directions which caused havoc on the roads, as well as affecting ambulances who were travelling in the area.
Diversions are in place but delays have shown to build up , making it difficult for some vehicles to go through.
It has not yet been confirmed how long the repairs will take as work is being carried out around the clock.
Bus services are also being affected so for anyone planning on passing through the area may want to plan their route ahead.
Diversion signs are in place using Belgrave Road, Ramsgate Road, Margate Road, Park Road, A299 Canterbury Road and the A28.
Gas company SGN explained that while road works are often planned months in advance, in the event of emergencies that put safety at stake, the response must be quick and efficient.
Updates to the situation can be found on the SGN website here.
