Students Spread Cultural Awareness with Music

Kent-Meridian’s Mariachi club celebrates cultural diversity in our district.

Hundreds of high school students screaming and cheering as they hold up their cell phones as flashlights is usually reserved for when a famous musician is in town, but the Kent-Meridian mariachi club also received this honor from their classmates during a multicultural assembly last year. Their Mariachi club is the first in Kent School District and performs to celebrate and spread awareness of this beautiful piece of Hispanic culture.

“It was overwhelming,” Kent-Meridian senior Adam Gómez said during a recent band rehearsal about performing in front of the entire student body. “We were nervous, but then we went out and people started screaming and cheering and we ended up playing really well.”

Adam, who wants to become a music teacher after he graduates from college, helped start the club last fall with the help of Assistant Principal Ricardo Robles and brothers Jair and Josue Gonzales.

“Everyone always says how diverse it is [at Kent-Meridian], and there’s some other cultural clubs, but I thought this school really needed a Mariachi,” Adam explained.

Josue graduated from Kent-Meridian last spring and Jair is a junior in the running start program, they both plan on pursuing careers in engineering.

“I love the style of [Mariachi] music,” Jair said. “It brings people together and gives us a way to express ourselves.” 

Mr. Robles helped the students bring the Mariachi club to life, advising them and arranging for the group to play at multicultural assemblies and events at different schools.

“My favorite part about being in Mariachi is when we all come together,” Adam explained. “We start playing and our voices and instruments come together for a beautiful sound.” He said people hear their music while passing by the band room and peek their heads in to say hi and offer their support.

Adam said the club has helped create awareness for Hispanic culture beyond stereotypes and has strengthened the community amongst Hispanic students at Kent-Meridian.

“We’re creating a greater awareness for Hispanic culture through music,” Adam said. “Everyone is welcome to join, you don’t have to speak Spanish or attend Kent-Meridian.”

Mr. Robles invites all KSD students to join Mariachi, regardless of their grade level. Practices are from 12:30-2:30 p.m. on Wednesdays and 2:30-4:30 p.m. on Fridays with times not yet established on Saturdays. Please call 253-373-4000 if interested.

Estudiantes difunden conciencia cultural con música

El club de Mariachis de Kent-Meridian celebra la diversidad cultural en nuestro distrito.

Cientos de estudiantes de la preparatoria gritan y aplauden mientras sostienen sus teléfonos celulares como linternas generalmente se reservan para cuando un músico famoso está en la ciudad, pero el club de mariachis Kent-Meridian también recibió este honor de sus compañeros de clase durante una asamblea multicultural el año pasado. Su club de Mariachis es el primero en el distrito escolar de Kent y actúa para celebrar y difundir la conciencia de esta hermosa pieza de la cultura hispana.

“Fue abrumador”, dijo el estudiante de último año de Kent-Meridian, Adam Gómez, durante un ensayo reciente de la banda en frente con todo el estudiantil de la preparatoria. “Estábamos nerviosos, pero luego salimos y los estudiantes comenzaron a gritar y con mucho anima y terminamos jugando muy bien”.

Adam, que quiere convertirse en profesor de música después de graduarse de la universidad, ayudó a iniciar el club el otoño pasado con la ayuda del subdirector Ricardo Robles y los hermanos Josue y Jair Gonzales.

“Todo el mundo siempre dice que hay mucho diversidad [en nuestra preparatoria Kent-Meridian], y hay otros clubes culturales, pero pensé que esta escuela realmente necesitaba un Mariachi”, explicó Adam.

Josue se graduó de Kent-Meridian en junio y Jair es un junior en la escuela, los dos hermanos planean seguir carreras en ingeniería. “Me encanta el estilo de música [Mariachi]”, dijo Jair. “Reúne a las personas y nos brinda una forma de expresarnos”.

El Sr. Robles ayudó a los estudiantes a dar vida al club de Mariachi, aconsejándolos y organizando que el grupo tocara en asambleas y eventos multiculturales en diferentes escuelas.

“Mi parte favorita de estar en Mariachi es cuando todos nos juntamos”, explicó Adam. “Comenzamos a tocar y nuestras voces e instrumentos se unen para obtener un sonido hermoso”. Dijo que la gente escucha su música mientras pasa por la sala de la banda y asoma la cabeza para saludar y ofrecer su apoyo.

Adam dijo que el club ha ayudado a crear conciencia sobre la cultura y herencia hispana más allá de los estereotipos y ha fortalecido la comunidad entre los estudiantes hispanos en Kent-Meridian.

“Estamos creando una mayor conciencia de la cultura hispana a través de la música”, dijo Adam. “Todos son bienvenidos, no tienen que hablar español o asistir a Kent-Meridian.”

El Sr. Robles invita a cualquier estudiante del Distrito Escolar de Kent a unirse a Mariachi sin importar el nivel de grado. Las prácticas son de 12:30-2:30 los miércoles y de 2:30-4:30 los viernes con horarios aún no establecidos los sábados. Por favor llame al 253-373-4000 si está interesado.
