By focusing on this year’s theme of “Better Together,” more than 160 Kentridge High School students and staff helped give back to their community through their Day of Service event on December 11.  

“In the past, Kentridge leadership has traditionally hosted a school-wide drive during the holiday season to give back to the community,” said Senior Khin Oo, who is in the applied leadership class at Kentridge and coordinated the event. “This year we decided to focus on the school’s motto for the year, Better Together.” 

“Better Together is our yearly theme that was decided by our leadership coordinators and ASB Officers before school started,” Jason Simonson, a teacher at Kentridge said. “We try to use it to help us define all our projects and focus for this year in ASB and both leadership classes.” 

Khin said she and other students on the leadership team reached out to other clubs at Kentridge, including the Art Club, Environmental Club, Fiber Arts Club, Key Club, and National Honor Society, to offer more opportunities for students to give back to our community.  

Students made cards for patients at Seattle Children’s Hospital, knit ornaments for residents of Aegis Assisted Living Facility, donated change for Northwest Harvest, cleaned up the outdoor courtyard, and helped teachers with projects in their classrooms. 

“I think as a school community, both staff and students were able to realize that they could make a difference and serve those in need,” Khin said. “Whether it was through a simple act such as a donation of spare change or even making tree decorations, the bottom line is a simple act of service goes a long way. When we are all able to lend a helping hand, not only are we helping improve the lives of those in need but ultimately, we become better together.”
