Crews from Kent Fire and Rescue Service have been seen responding to a large grass fire. The fire broke out at the Barton Point Coastal Park in Sheerness on Saturday night (July 16).

The crews urged people in the Marine Parade area ofSheerness to close windows and doors. This is due to the smoke coming from the nearby fire.

Five fire engines, as well as a fogging unit and an all terrain vehicle, were spotted in attendance. Crews were seen using hose reel jets and beaters in attempt to bring the fire under control and to extinguish it.

“A drone will also be flown to provide crews with a view from above. As work continues, smoke is expected to increase in the area, therefore the earlier advice for nearby residents to close windows and doors remains in place. “

It is not the only field fire to have broken out across Kent in recent weeks either. In Cobham, near Gravesend, 15 fire engines were sent to tackle a fire in a field on Sunday (July 10) whilst in Dartford a section of heathland went up in flames on July 6.

The fires come at a time when the UK is enduring a heatwave with temperatures exceeding 35C in parts of the country on July 18 and July 19. A red weather warning has been issued covering parts of Kent.
