Thanet: Sam Mendes spotted in Margate as filming for ‘Empire of Light’ continues near Dreamland

Director Sam Mendes has been seen in Margate as filming for his next motion picture continues in the area.

The feature ‘Empire of Light’ focuses around a beautiful old cinema.

Work on the production has already seen the iconic Dreamland totally transformed in preparation.

New images show the surrounding area blanketed in snow as part of the set design as well as some era-appropriate cars parked up outside Dreamland to match the 1980s setting of the picture.

Filming is set to take place in the area until March as part of a three month shooting schedule.

Sam Mendes’s last motion picture, 1917, is an historical First World War epic that wowed audiences and critics alike in 2019.

His work on the more recent Craig series of Bond films such as Skyfall and Spectre have also proven massively successful with both fans and at the Box Office.

Other recent photos of the shoot demonstrate the extensive changes made to Dreamland, with the iconic landmark lit-up in neon at night capturing the 80s aesthetic beautifully.

This upcoming project is also largely important for Mendes as it is his first original solo screenplay.

Some huge names in showbiz have joined the project including Olivia Coleman, Michael Ward and Colin Firth.

Olivia Coleman has seen massive success through her performances in hits such as The Crown and Broadchurch, while Michael Ward is known for his roles in Blue Story, Top Boy and The A List.

The film is set for a release in August of this year at the height of the summer movie season.
